What was the glass like before the flame came on?

Brief fogging on cool glass that clears as the unit warms is described in some manufacturers’ manuals. Heat & Glo gives that example for its Gateway model. A mark that was already there before lighting, or still visible after the appliance has cooled, belongs in a different category. A photograph taken from the room while the appliance is cold is useful.

Check for a pale mark when the appliance is cold

Heat & Glo’s Gateway manual distinguishes temporary moisture from film left during the initial curing of a new appliance. If yours is an established installation, mention whether any components have been replaced recently or the front has been cleaned with a new product. On an already cold, unlit unit, note if the veil is even or patchy and if it appears in the same place in daylight. Preserve the original photo.

Keep the glass assembly intact

Cleaning products, access and reassembly depend on the model. The fixed glass on a sealed appliance is part of the appliance assembly. Keep improvised cleaners, abrasive pads and glass-removal experiments out of the diagnosis. For a service visit, send the model and a picture of the whole front as well as a close view of the mark.
