Make a location record first
List each level and each sleeping area. CPSC recommends CO alarms on each level and outside sleeping areas; follow the manufacturer instructions and applicable local requirements. Record each alarm's room and the model information that can be read safely. For a managed building, distinguish equipment inside the unit from anything the building maintains.
Give each device its own next date
Check the maker's service-life and test instructions for that model. An installation date, a manufacture date and a battery-change date are not interchangeable. Ask the manager to note exactly which date is available. A device with an unreadable record may need different action from one with a clearly documented replacement date. Do not borrow an alarm from another occupied residence as a routine substitute.
Leave an alarm response beside the contact list
If a CO alarm sounds, move everyone to fresh air outside and call emergency services from safety. Do not re-enter until responders authorize it. A separate fireplace appointment is appropriate after any emergency response and as advised. An alarm's test button checks its alarm function as directed; testing or replacing it does not inspect the fireplace or its vent.
