Describe the work before asking whether it needs a permit

Maintenance, replacing an appliance and changing its venting are different scopes. Ask the proposal to name the equipment or component and describe what would be removed, altered or installed. Then confirm the applicable requirements with Building Services and the responsible contractor. This page does not classify your particular project as permitted or exempt.

Use the city’s current route for project questions

Marco Island Building Services publishes permit, plan-review and inspection resources, with a Citizen Self Service portal. Provide the property address and proposed scope when seeking guidance. Do not rely on a Naples mailing label, an old contractor checklist or a general county page to decide which process applies to a Marco Island property.

Keep repair findings and administrative approval separate

An on-site assessment may explain an observed defect, while a permit process addresses a defined project. Neither should be described as the other. If the proposed work changes after additional findings, ask whether the written scope and applicable approvals also need to change. Do not assume an approval for one component covers unrelated work.

  • Ask which component the estimate addresses.
  • Confirm who handles any required application and inspection coordination.
  • Keep the final scope, relevant approvals and completion record together.

Prepare a useful initial service request

Include the address, fireplace type if known, the concern and any current project reference. Say if work is already underway around the roof or fireplace enclosure. Existing photographs and documents can guide the discussion, but avoid opening equipment or climbing to inspect the chimney yourself. Ask for a confirmed appointment and next-step plan after the request is reviewed.
